The records consist of Partners in Mission (PIM) Board of Directors correspondence from 1974 through 1988. Correspondence includes originals and photocopies of correspondence to and from PIM staff and members of the board. Principal authors of the correspondence are PIM staff members James Mayer, Paul Strege, Bernie Marquardt, and PIM Board officers Paul Bente, president, and Marion Schmidt, treasurer. The majority of the correspondence is typewritten, but there are some handwritten letters as well as handwritten drafts of letters. Most of the correspondence in this series covers the period from 1978 through 1988. Much of it pertains to alerting members to upcoming meetings and the issues to be discussed at those meetings. In addition, there are completed mail-in ballots returned from board members voting on particular administrative resolutions and copies of correspondence sent to board members informing them of the results of votes on resolutions. There is also correspondence to the officers of the board requesting their action on administrative matters, such as signing documents needed to open a new bank account for PIM. There is a substantial amount of correspondence pertaining to the coordinator of PIM, the Rev. James W. Mayer, and the health problems that resulted in his death in March 1984. There are photocopies of this correspondence as well as originals. Much of the correspondence from 1985 until 1988 appears to be original and draft copies of memos to board members from board staff outlining either upcoming board meetings or changes taking place as a result of the impending merger that will create the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
